2013 MBA Student Award: Rachel Kingsley

KingsleyRachel Kingsley, MBA, RD, LDN, CDE, is a Registered, Licensed Dietitian-Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Educator with over 7 years of professional experience in the field of clinical dietetics and nutrition, and currently works as the Diabetes Education Program Coordinator and Outpatient Dietitian & Diabetes Educator for ARAMARK at Ohio Valley General Hospital.  Additionally, she serves as a Field Instructor in Sports Medicine and Nutrition for the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.   She also has 5 ½ years of volunteer experience working in food and nutrition public policy for local, state, and national dietetics organizations and currently serves as the federal Public Policy Coordinator for the Pennsylvania Dietetic Association.  Most recently she has presented at a national conference on nutrition policy grassroots engagement strategy and was also elected as treasurer for the Pittsburgh Dietetic Association for 2013-2014. View from the C-Suite: Insights from Women Who Cracked the Glass Ceiling (MBA Women International Event)

On April 2, 2013, eight Carlow MBA students participated in the networking event “View from the C-Suite: Insights from Women Who Cracked the Glass Ceiling” by MBA Women International – Pittsburgh Chapter. The students enjoyed dinner and intimate conversations with women who have earned a voice in the executive suite, including   Karen L. Larrimer, EVP, Chief Marketing Officer, PNC, Donna Sturgess, President, Buyology,  Executive in Residence, CMU, and Audrey Russo, President and CEO, Pittsburgh Technology Council.

Key insights shared by these inspirational leaders include (thanks to MBA student LaToya Johnson for this summary):

Karen Larrimer
–    “Stay out of the comfort zone”.   This helps build confidence.
–    Ask for what you want. Don’t assume management will always approach you.
–    Set your own boundaries.
–    Be efficient and organized.  Touch everything once and deal with things in the moment.
–    Get involved in things that you are passionate about.

Audrey Russo
–    Learn how to mesh opposites.
–    Be present, ask, and demand.
–    Best advice “No one can take away your spirit; you can only give it away.”

Donna Sturgess
–    Networking is good but you also need friends.
–    Leadership has to be diverse.
–    Brands that win have emotional connection with their customers.
–    There is so much competition in today’s business so you have to know the consumer beyond the spreadsheet.
–    Start-ups are hard!! Give it all you got & know what you are good at.
–    Do your homework on the company you want to work for. Research the company.
–    Know your strengths, weakness, and what you can fall back on.

2013 MBA Student Award: Kimberly Snyder

Snyder croppedKimberly Snyder is a Formulation Chemist with over 6 years of experience in the Science & Technology field working for PPG Industries, Inc. Most recently, her job title has changed to Account Management, where she provides sales and service to a multi-million dollar customer. Besides her MBA in Business Administration/Innovation Management from Carlow University, she holds a B.S in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, where she graduated magna cum laude or high honors, and was one of ten students chosen for the Robert E. McClure award, which recognized outstanding academic achievement in the chemical sciences and for having shown a probability for success in the field of chemistry.

2013 MBA Student Award: Shelley Niccolai

NiccolaiphotoShelley Niccolai is a Human Resource Professional with over 7 years experience in the HR field most recently joining the Bobby Rahal Automotive Group as a Human Resource Manager. Besides her MBA in Executive Management from Carlow University, she holds a B.S in Human Resource Management from Geneva College where she graduated with “Highest Distinction” and was one of a only a handful of students chosen to present at Geneva’s Research Honors Symposium which honors students’ high achievements in applied research project work.

MBA faculty Mu and Chung contribute to social justice through innovative research: Applying decision making methodology Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to eyewitness identification

 

Carlow MBA faculty members Enrique Mu and Rachel Chung have been working on an innovative research study where they apply the popular operations research tool Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), conventionally used for managerial decision making, to the process of eyewitness identification with police line-ups. AHP is a decision making methodology for operations research and is part of the Carlow MBA core curriculum. Continue reading
